Lot 1310: Turn of the Century Baseball Advertisement on Oilcloth
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Never mind that it's selling something. This original 19th century advertisement is a striking work of art that combines multiple styles and just-right splashes of color. The artist had game. Juxtaposition of attractive woman on a fence separating her from a ballpark full of men carries a powerful message -- and probably not one that future suffragists would embrace. The 16 by 20-inch piece on oil cloth is affixed to a cardboard matte and appears to be slightly trimmed (o/w EX). Brings alive an era of straw hats and single-tiered stadiums. They're not just selling baseball.
