Lot 1650: 1900 Boxing Ticket Collection
ITEM DESCRIPTION

While boxing was still illegal in much of the U.S. in 1900, in New York City the sport was thriving at numerous boxing clubs -- probably the most important being the New Broadway Athletic Club, whose regular bouts are documented by these 7 extraordinarily rare full tickets, which carry names like "Bernstein vs. Smith", "Bonner vs. Hanharan", and "Maher vs. Choynski" -- the last apparently "Chrysanthemum Joe" Choynski, who beat both Bob Fitzsimmons and Jack Johnson in non-title 1890s bouts. All bear the club's logo, seat number and price (3 or 5 bucks), and impressive designs on the back such as a great wild horses motif. 4 of the ducats are complete (2 1/2 x 6 1/2") and unused, 3 are stubs. Tickets are remarkably EX with some outer-edge browning and minor snags along the edges.
