In this outstanding bronze sculpture from the 1940s, Joseph Brown captures the precise moment when a fighter has just been caught by a shot and is about to topple backward, his legs buckling, face knitted with confusion. The brilliance of the work is that the fighter maintains a heroic sense of dignity. Like wounded Achilles, he is wounded but he faces defeat courageously. The 9 ½ x 6 x 8" figure is alloyed to vertiably sparkle with its mostly noir shadows speckled with light brown flecks. Signed on the foot by Brown and mounted on a 5 x 8 x 1" wooden base. Slight water stains on the base but overall this important and compelling piece of sculpture is in excellent condition.
