Lot 1672: "Pieta" (Head) Boxing Bronze by Joseph Brown

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $500.00
Winning Bid:
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

No Brown piece better exemplifies his concept of modern sculpture rooted in artistic ideals of the past than his two 1944 creations that carry the title of "Pieta." Brown borrowed the title from Michelangelo's most inspiring piece of sculpture for his incomparable 1944 statue of a fallen fighter being assisted by the referee (which is offered separately in this auction) as well as for this smaller piece of an aging but unbowed fighter, which reflects much the same theme of pathos, using a Classical Greek and Renaissance prototype for the fighter's weathered face, his thoughts silently fixed on life's uncertainties away from the ring. One can almost feel the pathos. Black and dark brown alloyed bust is mounted neck-up on a 2 1/2 x 2 3/8 x 1" base. Bust itself is 2 x 2 1/2 x 3" and is signed on back of neck by Brown. Bust needs tightening to base but overall the piece is EX-NRMT..
