Lot 1666: "Hockey Player" by Joseph Brown

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $2,500.00
Winning Bid:
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

Only the gods could play ice hockey in the nude, which is why Brown's 1956 bronze of a Roman warrior-styled hockey player in full view with stick and skates seems not the slightest bit incongruent. The player pushes off his left skate and heads up ice, looking with anticipcation to the right for a pass as his sinewy hands coddle the bladed stick. While hockey may not have been one of the sports played on Mt. Olympus, Brown makes it seem as though it should have been, giving the sport a majestic context, as if Mercury, with his winged helmet and sandals was born to play the game. Figure is dark brown flecked with green and stands 11 x 6 1/2 x 12" mounted on a bronze plate atop a cherry-colored wooden base of 13 1/2 x 8 x 1". Brown's signature is on the bronze plate. Stick is slightly bent. Piece slightly pocked and base has a few nicks but overall EX-MT.
