Lot 1667: "Line Buck" Football Bronze by Joseph Brown

One of Brown's larger-sized pieces is this 1959 bronze sculpture of a runner carrying a football through then line, both arms gripping the pigskin, head down like a battering ram. The runner's right leg is bent at a 90-degree angle at the knee, and his left leg drives off the mark. Brown ingeniously anchored the entire weight of the statue on the player's left toes, creating an illusion of immense power generated by that left leg pushing off. Figure of the runner stands 8 x 4 x 9 and is mounted on a 9 x 5 x 2" silver base. Engraved with Brown's signature on the player's back. Figure is alloyed in a number of subtly different bronze shades dark and light. Piece is NRMT with a few barely visible scratches. Endlessly fascinating, logistically and creatively, and will ring very true for anyone who's ever played the game.
