Lot 1304: Lefty Grove 300 Victory Burris Jenkins Original Artwork
ITEM DESCRIPTION

||||||||||||
Lefty Grove gets the milestone treatment by illustrator Burris Jenkins in this 1941original that appeared in a newspaper. Jenkins, a master of sports cartoons, extols the virtues of experience as Grove chases victory No. 300. Gene Sarazen is celebrated for his longevity on the right of Grove's pencil-rendered likeness, and even Father Time gets into the act by taking a cut at the upper left. You can see the editor's notations in blue and red wax pen. Jenkins' signature is between the two Sarazen captions. The 26"x24" work is EX and beautifully framed to a 34"x30" presentation, with the corners colored to appear like metal. The caption to the left of Grove's plant foot tells of Joe DiMaggio extending his hitting streak to 49 the night before. Even as the old march toward records, Jenkins reminds fans, the new are already making their own mark.
