Lot 198: Citizen Kane Souvenir Movie Program (NRMT)

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $300.00
Winning Bid: $431.88
Price Realized: $516.10
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

The looming face of a glaring, pipe-chomping Orson Welles on this rare theater program for "Citizen Kane" has long been the face synonymous with what many film buffs call the best movie ever made. It was indeed Welles' baby, as producer, director, writer, and star, and with its role in the American cinema so profound, Welles could never again live up to the standard he set, with his thinly-veiled portrayal of publishing baron William Randolph Hearst and his "Rosebud" secret, only later on degenerating into a portly pitchman. Amazing, even for Hollywood back then, the movie's budget was a mere $500,000, though RKO's PR budget did allow for these classy 9 x 12" souvenir programs loaded with photos, factoids and screen credits. The one here is remarkably NRMT, its cover appropriately dominated by the pastel tinted Welles image, is firm and unflawed and the inside pages free of any soiling or discoloration. Like the film, a pristine piece of Americana.
