Lot 351: First Ever Whitey Ford Wire Photo as 1950 "Dark Horse"

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $100.00
Winning Bid: $98.33
Price Realized: $117.50
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

Terrific, 1950 wire service photo of a 23-year-old "Ed" Ford -- before being hung eternally with the nickname "Whitey" -- at the Yankees' spring camp in St. Petersburg with pitching coach Jim Turner. Rather than a "Chairman of the Board", Ford was, as the caption read, a "Yankee 'Dark Horse'" and wouldn't go north with the club, instead remaining with the Kansas City Blues. But after being called up on June 29, he'd go 9-1 and win a World Series game. 8 x 10 photo has some very small, minor creases so still EX-MT. AP stamp on back.
