Lot 509: Buck Freeman Lifetime Baseball Passes
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Two lifetime passes granted in the mid-'30s to "Dead Ball" era slugger Buck Freeman -- one an extremely rare silver medallion engraved with the signatures of league presidents Will Harridge (AL) and Ford Frick (NL), the other a brown cardboard version issued by the NL with Frick's replica signature. Freeman, a la Babe Ruth, began as a left-handed pitcher but was put in the lineup every day for his bat. Only he and Sam Crawford ever led both leagues in HRs, and Freeman was on 2 Red Sox pennant winners and the 1st World Series champ in 1903. His HR high of 25 with the NL's Washington Senators in 1899 wasn't bettered until Ruth came along, with a lively ball. Both medallions 2 1/2 x 4". First reads "The Major Leagues of Professional Baseball" and credits Freeman with "long and meritorious service." Top engraved with crossed bats, ball and laurel leaves. Understandable tarnishing/scratching, mainly on left and right borders and reverse, o/w VG-EX -- still a stunning piece. Other pass reading "National League of Professional Baseball Clubs" is neatly made out to "Mr. John B. Freeman" and is remarkably NRMT.
