Anything Bucky Dent wore during the 1978 season is bound to be sprinkled with pixie dust. The cap he donned in that magical year still has game dust, perhaps kicked up at Fenway Park on Oct. 2, 1978. Dent's three-run home run off Boston's Mike Torrez highlighted the Yankees' 5-4 victory in a one-game playoff, perpetuating the Curse of the Bambino and solidifying Dent's place among Yankee immortals. "My 1978 Hat Bucky Dent," the shortstop wrote on the bill in white chalk marker that has faded slightly. Sweat and grime on the headband, a perspiration-blurred No. 20 in thick felt tip and a stain under the brim tell of a rollercoaster pennant chase. The Yankees down by 14 games on July 19; the Red Sox winning their last eight games to tie them. Then the moment. Dent hit .243 with just four home runs all season. On that day, he stood far taller than the 37-foot-high Green Monster wall. The interlocking NY on the cap is ribboned with dirt, too. For Yankee fans, it's holy dirt.
