This baseball, which looks "caramel coated" in appearance, will surely be a confection for Cobb collectors. Single signed balls by the prickly Georgia Peach are always a rarity, and this is among the best of the breed, not only because of a splendid signature and personalized inscription, but also because it has been dated to February 23, 1959, two years before his death at age 74. At the time, Cobb was seemingly on a farewell tour of baseball ballparks, making appearances at Yankee Stadium in 1960 and throwing out the first-ever home game of the Los Angeles Angels in April of '61. He also made the scene at lesser venues, perhaps accounting for the ball carrying the stamp "Semi-Pro League," to the left of which Cobb wrote with a flourish, "To Frank Kennedy, Jr. From Ty Cobb" in blue ink. The well-preserved signature is a Cobb classic, grading a 9/10. Ball is heavily shellacked, leaving a golden glazed veneer that gives this great Cobb horsehide an appropriately antique look.
