Lot 124: Marilyn Monroe Signed Check

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $500.00
Winning Bid: $1,697.27
Price Realized: $2,028.24
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

This check was signed on December 16, 1950 by the 24-year-old actress with the name she had adopted just four years before when Norma Jean Baker dyed her hair platinum blond and became Marilyn Monroe. Though she had appeared in "The Asphalt Jungle" and "All About Eve" that year, the name was still somewhat obscure, and the Bank of America check (Laurel-Sunset branch) made out to cash for $200 probably was much more than petty cash to her at the time. The signature is in black ink, with a carefree hand that flourished the "M's" with sweeping arcs, a great early Marilyn that grades a solid 9 out of a possible 10. The light blue 2 1/2" x 6" check is NRMT.
