Lot 1778: 1970s Wrestling Boxing Style Posters (15)

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $750.00
Winning Bid: $892.31
Price Realized: $1,066.31
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

Cache of original pro wrestling posters from the early '70s, when there was no WWE, no Stone Cold, no rip-off pay-per-view shows and no steroid bloated cretins inside the ropes. There was merely "world's championship" matches rigged, er, arranged by promoters like Abe Ford, who regularly filled Boston Garden with cards such as the ones here. Wrestling "purists" old enough to remember and appreciate the good old days will get light-headed at names like Bruno Sammartino, Gorilla Monsoon, George "The Animal" Steele, Brassy Freddie Blassie, Arnold Skoaland, Captain Lou Albano, Professor Tanaka, and "The Violent and Treacherous Kentucky Butcher", as well as those great midget wrestlers done in later by politcally correct times, and lady grapplers like The Fabulous Moolah. Tag-team and "Texas Death Style" matches by the boatload on these posters, the majority (12) of which are 22 x 29", the others 17 x 26" (3), all festooned by blood (of course) red and blue lettering and classic photo images of the feature event contenders, which almost always included Bruno. Posters are overall EX-MT. Several posters have newspaper clippings, ticket stubs, and programs, from the events, taped onto the reverse by the very dedicated wrestling fan who had the foresight to collect these fabulous doubloons of a now-bygone era.
