Lot 1621: Marvin Hagler's Fight Worn Robe

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $500.00
Winning Bid: $1,402.70
Price Realized: $1,676.23
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

Middleweight champ Marvelous Marvin Hagler didn't have the media-friendly smile of his rival Sugar Ray Leonard, but he wasn't above advertising himself. This white silk Everlast robe he wore for fights has "Marvelous Marvin Makes it in Massachusetts" with a thumbs-up sign on the back. Must have been a knockout for the state's tourism board. Garment looks as if it went a few rounds on its own. Blood is smeared on the collar and there are perspiration and other stains throughout. Black trim, sash and lapel with EVERLAST label sewn on the breast pocket. Hagler, a Newark native who was raised in Rocky Marciano's hometown of Brockton, Mass., defended his middleweight title 12 times. He defeated Roberto Duran and Tommy Hearns in epic fights and ended his career with a loss to Leonard. "Warrior" was always the word that came to mind about Hager.
