Lot 1565: 1948 Photo of "The Babe Bows Out" by Nat Fein
ITEM DESCRIPTION

||||||||||||
Closer-cropped version of the world famous 1948 Nat Fein photograph, "The Babe Bows Out", which is also offered in this same auction. This 7 x 9" print has a tigher perspective, cutting out the scrambling photographers, the outer edge of the Yankee Stadium grandstand, and some of the sky that appears white because of the low light utilized by Fein in his masterful rear-angle shot of the Babe's final appearance at the Stadium only weeks before his death. It also appears to have been touched up a bit for contrast and detail, lightening Ruth's uniform and darkening his hair and the shadow of his ear. There are also outlines added to the fingers that clutch at the cap at his side. These touch-ups may have been done by the newspaper or wire service that ran the print, and the reverse is streaked with editorial notations in red and dark pencil. In fact, rather than the original, this version may have been the one seen by most people in newspapers around the world. Print is EX with some minor staining at the bottm unaffecting the emotionally gripping image.
