Lot 1495: 1961 World Series Championship Ring

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $2,500.00
Winning Bid:
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

The Yankee dynasty produced not only glittering stars but incredible jewelry as well. The 1961 World Series Championship ring is among the best. Maybe that's why historians call that period the golden years. Fourteen-karat gold band with leaf brocade cradles a diamond that is as fine as any outside the Bronx. "New York Yankees World Champions" is engraved around it. The Yankees' top-hat logo and "1961" decorate the sides. Well-preserved salesman sample by Balfour is an eye-popping testament to greatness. And unlike some of today's finger monuments, it won't make your finger collapse from the weight. The only suspense around the '61 Yankees was whether Roger Maris or Mickey Mantle would break Babe Ruth's home run record and when they would be fitted for their rings. The Yankees were that dominant. They had a season record of 109-53 and beat the Reds in the Series, 4 games to 1. Whitey Ford won two games to win the MVP to go along with his Cy Young award. It was a gem of a team with a ring to match. Now if only someone could figure out a way to incorporate pinstripes into jewelry design.
