Lot 704: 1973 Roberto Clemente Bronze #26/200
ITEM DESCRIPTION

Roberto Clemente looks like a Greek god wearing spikes in Malcolm Alexander's sensational 1973 bronze sculpture. Limited edition (No. 26/200) captures every crease in his uniform and every muscle peeking through the fabric. Clemente follows through with his necked cocked to one side. It is comforting that the familiar gesture of a sports icon who left us too soon could be preserved. Alexander, known for his Alaskan pipeline monument and a statue of Jimmy Stewart, created the Clemente work shortly after the future Hall of Famer perished in a plane crash. The bronze base is signed by the artist and the entire piece stands on a marble-like platform with an engraved gold placard that reads "Roberto Clemente by Malcolm Alexander." When originally released this statue retailed for $2,500 and sold out.
