Lot 1619: Joe Louis vs. Red Burman On-Site Fight Poster

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $2,500.00
Winning Bid: $3,598.99
Price Realized: $4,300.79
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

The first Louis on-site fight poster we've had in nearly a decade -- and one of the best ever.Magnificent and majestic in every way, the 3-sheeter for the Brown Bomber's 13th title heavyweight title defense -- a January 31, 1941 bout against Red Burman at Madison Square Garden -- has been pieced together into its original immense size of 40 x 80" and impeccably mounted on a linen backing. Standing stately and near seamlessly as it does, it may be a one of a kind in terms on its dimensions. Excellent condition with the yellow background color and black lettering strong and intense. Great b&w set-in shots of Louis and Burman, who is listed as the "Leading Challenger," though in reality Burman was just another sacrificial lamb in Joe's "bum of the month" campaign, when it became all but impossible to find a legitimate challenger for him. This became quite apparent when Joe stopped him in round 6 of a one-sided affair. Fight historians will note that the poster was more of a self-tribute to the Garden and its boxing promoter Mike Jacobs than it was to Louis. Top of the poster has a huge section of red with "Mad. Sq. Garden" in yellow lettering, and beneath the date of the fight, the reminder "Under the auspices of 20th Century Sporting Club Inc., Mike Jacobs, Promoter." Bottom reads: "Buy your ticket now at Mad. Sq. Garden box office." Thus, the splendid poster is a history lesson attesting to the enormous power the Garden that rendered even a Joe Louis a servant for their purposes. All original except for a slight restoration to some of the folds. A rare opportunity to own a Louis/Garden poster of this magnitude.
