Lot 1632: George Foreman vs. Joe Frazier I On-Site Fight Poster
ITEM DESCRIPTION

||||||||||||
Ultra-rare on-site poster from the Frazier-Foreman heavywight title fight in Kingston, Jamaica on January 22, 1973 recalls Howard Cosell croaking, "Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!" over and over as Big George was dropping not-so-Smokin' Joe 6 times -- the last time after uppercutting clean him off his feet. Poster may have billed the fight as "The Sunshine Showdown" but it was sundown for Joe and a dawning for George. Few of these spectacular full-sized (22 x 28") posters from that incredible night are to be found, and this one's utterly spectacular, its pulsating yellow background, red "sun" and red and black lettering strong as the mid-day Jamaican sun. On left and right are b&w images of the fighters, Frazier billed as "Undefeated Champion" and Foreman "Undefeated No. 1 Challenger." Not a speck or wrinkle is visible on the EX-MT poster, which is mounted under glass in a black 26 x 32" frame. Important piece that presaged the changing of the boxing guard.
