Lot 1618: 1950 Rocky Marciano Fight Worn Trunks from His Bout with Ted Lowry

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $5,000.00
Winning Bid: $5,948.74
Price Realized: $7,108.75
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

Rocky, feasting on local New England fighters while moving toward a title shot, donned these classic black satin and white trim boxing trunks for a November 13, 1950 bout with Ted "Tiger" Lowry in Providence. This was their 2nd meeting, both in Providence, and Rocky again pounded Lowry for his 29th consecutive victory. Fighters fought with amazing frequency compared with today, and The Rock would be in the ring 15 more times in the next 22 months before getting his shot at heavyweight champ Jersey Joe Walcott on September 23, 1952. Trunks are manufactured by Benlee, with their label at the center waistband, and are displayed under glass against a snow shite background in a regal-looking 26 x 29" black frame with gold inlaid borders. Gold plaque at lower right reads: "Rocky Marciano Fight Worn Trunks, Marciano vs. Lowry, Providence, RI, No. 13, 1950, Won by Marciano Ten Round Decision." Trunks exhibit minor soling and very slight fading but are generally EX. Trunks came from the family of Rocky Marciano and includes a LOA from his brother. Memorabilia associated with the only undefeated heavyweight champ is becoming scarcer, and these trunks are the ultimate Rocky keeper.
