Lot 550: Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Signed Baseball

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $2,000.00
Winning Bid: $3,167.11
Price Realized: $3,784.70
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

Baseball's most celebrated Odd Couple may not have liked each other very much, but together they were the heart and soul of the Yankees' Murderer's Row batting order of the '20s and '30s. Similarly, the waddling, loquacious Ruth and the sculpted, silent Gehrig created a perfect alchemy on any ball that they signed, imbuing it with a near metaphysical quality that exponentially increases the historical value of a ball signed singly by either man. Case in point: this beautiful Official American League (Harridge) baseball signed by the Bambino and the Iron Horse in black ink. The signatures are large and clear with Gehrig signing just to the right of The Babe. Signatures have faded over the years but are certainly readable, with Ruth's stretching a good 3 inches across the sweet spot, and the flourishes of the "L" and "G" in Gehrig's marker being especially pleasing. Overall, each autograph rates 3 to 4 out of a possible 10. Circa 1933 Baseball is clean and majestic, with only minor specking, and the stampings crystal clear.
