Lot 593: Lefty Grove's Hall of Fame Signed Baseball
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Lefty, whose personality was as tough as old shoe leather in his playing days, mellowed out quite a bit in his retirement years, becoming probably the best baseball storyteller around. His latter-day popularity especially among his surviving contemporaries, explains why this remarkable ball has been touched almost exclusively by the Hall of Fame hands who signed it for him at the 1968 induction ceremonies in Cooperstown. Old softie that he'd become, Lefty then gave it to his nephew, who owned it for years. 14 bold autographs on a near pristine hide -- perhaps among the last few signatures by some of these legends who at the time were quite elderly, including Grove himself, Casey Stengel, Pie Traynor, Lloyd Waner, Max Carey, Joe Cronin, Frank Frisch, Joe Medwick, Red Ruffing, Ray Schalk, Goose Goslin, Warren Giles, Heinie Manush and Sam Rice. All signatures are fully legible and rate 8-9/10.
