Lot 1950: 1997-98 Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup Trophy

The Stanley Cup is the most recognizable trophy in sports and its mini-replica for each winning player, coach and staff member is no less iconic. Mike Belisle received this as head scout during the Detroit Red Wings' second straight Stanley Cup campaign in 1998. The emotion invested in this 2 1/2-pound silver stunner is immeasurable. The Red Wings won their first Cup in 42 years the season before but six days later learned that defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov was nearly paralyzed in a limousine accident. Moments after the Red Wings vanquished the Capitals to sweep the '98 finals, Steve Yzerman wheeled Konstantinov onto the ice and placed the Cup in his lap. Even a bowl as big as the Stanley Cup's could not hold all the tears. The 18-inch-high Stanley Cup mini-me is the epitome of engraved elegance. Flourishes on the cup part are a tasty touch. The Ilitch family members didn't score a goal -- they're the owners -- but you'd think they led the league by the way their names dominate the scroll of those who contributed. The players are listed in smaller type below. The trophy comes with Belisle's letter of authenticity and our guarantee that owning this classic sports heirloom will reap its own rewards for years to come.
