Lot 1901: Late 1920s Harry Oliver Game Worn Boston Bruins Wool Sweater

Weaving history and style in a museum-quality treasure, the original sweater Harry Oliver wore for the 1928-29 Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins is strikingly preserved. Gorgeous wool knit of brown, mustard and beige has minor game staining, including blood, and a few holes courtesy of some overeager defenseman. But it is no worse for the wear than today's nylon jerseys. The stunning logo of a Bruin sandwiched by BOSTON and BRUINS is the centerpiece. Striped sleeves and a giant felt "9" in brown with mustard trim in back also grab the eye. Oliver was a 155-pound greyhound who later made the Hall of Fame. Besides scoring 85 goals in the NHL, he was one of the better-behaved players, never logging more than 24 minutes a season in the penalty box. In this sweater, he looked great just sitting still.
