Lot 1167: Three Early Goldsmith Salesman's Sample Baseball Uniform Catalogues
ITEM DESCRIPTION

||||||||||||
Looking much like vintage game programs, these 3 Goldsmith "Base Ball Uniforms" catalogues from 1924, 1926 and 1930 -- complete with actual swatches of the flannel and cotton uniforms of the era -- recreate baseball as it was, in "letter-perfect" detail, as the catalogues' purpose was to sell uniforms and monograms suitable for big leaguers as well as beer leaguers. There was a Goldsmith's "Made to Measure" uniform for everyone, with models including the Major League, State League, Commercial League, Suburban League, Municipal League and Amateur League -- each highlighted by a photo of a big leaguer in uniform in the '26 issue including Pie Traynor, Kiki Cuyler & Vic Aldridge, as well as a little hometown favoritism with a team shot of the '25 Reds, and by illustrations of players in the other two issues. Covers are G-VG (with a terrific front and back illustration on the '26, which appeared in smaller version on the back cover of the '24, and a game action photo on the '30) while the contents are EX with scattered and unobtrusive soiling/foxing. Slight page separation on the spine of the '26. Baseball history that literally reaches into the "fabric" of the game.
