Lot 603: Satchel Paige Single Signed Baseball

Old Satch threw a hell of a lot of these babies around the Western Hemisphere in his day -- a frame that covered around 60 years -- so what more perfect a Paige piece is there than this ball singly signed by the master of mirthful moundsmanship? Fittingly, it carries one of the best Paige signatures that can be found, clear and crisp as any trouble ball, jump ball, bee ball or two-hump ball from his repertoire, reading, "Best wishes, from Satchel Paige, To Pete" in blue ink high on a side panel. Signature grades a solid 9/10. The Wilson ball isn't an Official Major League Ball but carries the stamp "Official Approved Major League Specifications", which is somewhat apropos given that Paige's best work came not under the official auspices of major league baseball but more than met major league-quality specifications. Condition of the ball is EX-EX+ with a few light splotches of discoloration on the surface and within the laces, but no major damage and a pleasing light gold tone. It's been estimated that over 10 million people saw Paige do his stuff, and Satch himself estimated (conservatively) that he won 2,000 games. So while Paige said not to look back, balls like this beauty let us do just that, and marvel at one of the game's all-time legends all over again.
