Lot 1811: 1951 New York Football Giants Team Signed Photo

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $200.00
Winning Bid: $327.18
Price Realized: $390.98
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

These Giants are all dressed up in this 1951 team-signed photo with no place to go despite a 9-2-1 record. Most noteworthy are two of the team's secondary: defensive back Emlen Tunnell (top, second from left), the first African-American in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He signed "Em Tunnel" in the fourth column from the left. The other became famous for his exploits on the sideline. He is in the middle row, fifth from the left. He had hair then but imagine him later, balding under a fedora as he walks the sidelines, the picture of calm. That is defensive back and punter Tom Landry, later the legendary coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He signed three names below Tunnell. Black and white 8-by-10 has crease cutting through then vice president Wellington Mara (top row, right). One corner was also folded. The picture's clarity is excellent, the autographs NRMT and Yankee Stadium provides the perfect frame. Other prominent team members who appear are quarterback Charley Conerly, receiver Kyle Rote and running back Eddie Price. The Giants couldn't beat the Browns on two occasions, but they made a handsome team picture.
