We simply don't believe there are many more desirable or meaningful pieces of Clemente memorabilia than this unspeakably rare equipment bag that Roberto used to pack his gear in his sojourns with his hometown Santurce Cangrejeros of the Puerto Rican Winter League. Moreover, the specific history of the bag recalls one of Clemente's greatest moments on his home turf, as it dates back to the 1954-55 season. That winter would mark Clemente's last round of competition before he'd be brought up to the Pirates in the spring, and he made sure he'd go up to the bigs with a bang. Or rather, team president Pedrin Zorrilla did, by importing the services of no less than Willie Mays to play in the same outfield as the young Clemente -- to whom, amazingly, the Say Hey Kid actually took a backseat in adulation. The fact is, even before taking one big-league at-bat, Roberto was a national hero, as he'd already led Santurce to titles in Puerto Rico and Cuba. For those who ever wondered what would happen if Clemente and Mays played in the same outfield, so devastating was this team that they were dubbed "Escuadron del Panico" -- or "The Swarm of the Panic" -- by their opponents and the island's sportswriters, for the angst in other team's eyes when the Cangrejeros took the field. As a further aside for Clemente collectors, the '54-55 season was also when he donned the number 21", having worn "39" previously. With the fact the team changed their name the following season makes this definitively from the classic 1954-55 season!!! Thus, the blue and white canvas bag boasts a prophetically large "21" on one side panel, with the team's stylized "S" (which looks somewhat like the White Sox "S") on the other panel. The top has a brown zipper with small square leather patches mounting the zipper on either side. One of the patches has come loosened, but can be easily repaired. Bag shows understandable wear, as do most Clemente items, attesting to his tendency to get all the use he could out of his equipment. Still it is in excellent condition. Measures 23" across and 15" from top to bottom. We defy anyone to say a chill doesn't run down their spine just looking at the bag, which like those grainy film images of the great Clemente invoke all of the emotions of his storied life and tragic death. Originally came from a close friend of Clemente's.
