Lot 371: Rogers Hornsby and Son Ponce Contracts (Pair)

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $1,000.00
Winning Bid: $1,308.73
Price Realized: $1,563.93
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

Rogers Hornsby had the jones for baseball when he and his 24-year-old son William accepted these contracts with Ponce of the Puerto Rican League for the 1950-51 season. Notarized 8 1/2 by 11-inch "jugador" (player) contract of 24-year-old William is plus the 53-year-old Rogers' managerial pact. The elder Hornsby's name value meant something -- the detailed agreement shows him making $600 "semi-monthly." "Bill Hornsby" is prominent in the included team photo but Dad is absent. Rogers Hornsby returned to big league managing the next year with the St. Louis Browns and then the Cincinnati Reds. That was no surprise, considering the Hall of Famer once said of winters not spent playing baseball: "I stare out the window and wait for spring." EX-MT.
