Lot 524: Track and Field Vintage Signed Magazine Pages with Steve Prefontaine (4)

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $200.00
Winning Bid: $848.62
Price Realized: $1,014.10
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

Signed artwork and photos of Jesse Owens, Renaldo Nehemiah, Steve Prefontaine, and International Olympic Committee president Avery Brundage. Color sketch of Owens exploding from the blocks in his Ohio State uniform with a stadium in the background follows the vivid renderings of dime-store novel covers at the time. Signature reads "My Best Always, Jesse Owens" and flows upward from the crook of his left elbow. In the photo of Nehemiah dominating a college field, his autograph appears to be running the hurdles as well. Long-distance legend Prefontaine, who would die tragically in a 1975 car accident at the peak of his career, signed his photo on his sinewy legs. Brundage, the man who built the IOC and earned enmity for his autocratic ways, applied his inscription just above the Olympic rings he proudly oversaw. A gold-medal collection. Prefontaine has not the best contrast (EX) but the rest are NRMT.
