Lot 1868: 1954 Bert Bell Post-NFL Deferred Pay Contract
ITEM DESCRIPTION
December 31, 1954 contract between Commissioner Bell and the NFL stipulates that the league would hold in trust $10,000 a year to pay for deferred compensation to Bell, or his trustees, after his tenure as commissioner was over, either through retirement, illness or death. Bell insisted on the contract because of the uncertainty of the league's future. An intriguing clause in the 9-page contract including riders is that one trustee was Carroll Rosenbloom, owner of the Baltimore Colts, a bit of favoritism and conflicted interests that would never go down today. Bell's signature appears in blue fountain pen with that of his wife Frances Upton Bell. Sigs are mint, contract is EX.
