Lot 287: Home Run Baker with Bat by Charles Conlon

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $300.00
Winning Bid: $2,401.20
Price Realized: $2,869.43
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

Early '20s Conlon (he was working for Paul Thompson at the time) 5 x 7 of a sullen looking Home Run Baker shows exactly why those inspired shutterbugs were so ahead their time. While most sports photogs of the day shied away from jocks' personal anguish to present a heroically distant veneer, Conlon looked for introspection and pain in the eyes of men like Baker, who had been eclipsed by Babe Ruth and clearly knew his time as a star was about over. Thompson's copyright stamp is on the back (under a later Sport magazine mailing label) with Conlon's left-handed writing of Baker's name. EX+.
