Joe Cronin, who later in life was the AL's president, began his charmed career as player-manager for the Washington Senators in the '20s when these 4 wire photos of him were published. By far the most interesting is the close-up shot snapped on the eve of his 1933 World Series loss to the Giants. Though he was owner Clark Griffith's nephew by marriage, nepotism didn't make him a star; his bat and glove did (in fact, Griffith later traded him to the Red Sox), and the other shots show his prowess with those tools on the field.
