Jaw-dropping, previously unknown wire photo of Gehrig in his Columbia uniform, hole in his left sock, is an incredible find -- as the amazing image shows Gehrig pitching! This may be the only such photo around, and if it seems like Lou is merely taking a wind-up as a lark, the attached caption on the back confirms his double-duty role: "Columbia University Twirler -- A Star On The Mound As Well As At The Bat." Thus, it seems Gehrig tried to emulate the young Babe Ruth before soon dropping the "twirling." Amazing indeed.
