Lot 542: 1918 All-Star Baseball with Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $3,000.00
Winning Bid:
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

An astounding artifact, this hallowed Reach Official American League Ball (Ban Johnson), signed by 11 members chosen to the 1918 Walter Camp Baseball All-American Team, includes one of the earliest Babe Ruth autographs we've ever seen honoring his role in what would be the last Red Sox title team for 86 years. That year, Babe went 13-7 with a 2.22 ERA AND led baseball with 11 home runs! Ruth's John Hancock sits on a side panel, written like the others in black steel tip fountain pen, and grading a somewhat faded but eminently legible 6.5 out of a possible 10. Still, Babe really was just a babe, a junior member of the cast selected by Camp -- who while better known as the "Father of American Football" had been a talented pitcher as a youth and was an avid baseball authority and whose expertise was given properly due respect by ballplayers. Witness the signatures of the cream of the crop of the "deadball era"-- fellow HOFers Ty Cobb (7), Home Run Baker (signed "J. Franklin Baker") (7), Walter Johnson (3), Tris Speaker (4) & Eddie Collins (4), as well as Braggo Roth, Charley O'Leary, Cy Perkins & Nick Altrock. Ball itself is a most pleasing light gold color, flecked in a few spots by harmless patches of discoloration. Blue and red stitches are bold and tight. Overall, ball rates 6 out of 10 and is one of the most significant horsehides to be found anywhere.
