Lot 1492: 1939 New York Yankees Team Signed Baseball
ITEM DESCRIPTION

The signatures of some of the most illustrious Yankee legends are almost as numerous as the seams on this magical horsehide from the epochal Yankee season of 1939 -- when the Bronx Bombers' tradition of winning continued "seamlessly" even as they were kicked in the stomach by news of Lou Gehrig's fatal illness, revealed to the world by the Iron Horse himself in his unforgettable July 4th valedictory address in a hushed Yankee Stadium. With Joe DiMaggio having taken over the load and a cast of veteran stalwarts, the club went 106-45 and blew away the Reds in a 4-game World Series sweep, their 4th straight championship. The Official OAL (Harridge) ball is signed by over 23 members of that epic team -- most notably Lou Gehrig, who penned his name on the sweet spot - a rarity for team balls dating to his last season, as most 1939 Yankee team balls bear clubhouse Gehrig autographs. Other HOFers: DiMaggio, Bill Dickey (both sec.), Lefty Gomez, Red Ruffing, and manager Joe McCarthy, as well as Frank Crosetti, Babe Dahlgren, George Selkirk, Tommy Henrich, Johnny Murphy, Atley Donald, etc. Signatures average an "8.5" out of 10 with Gehrig rating a 7.
