Lot 589: Kenesaw Mountain Landis Single Signed Baseball

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $1,500.00
Winning Bid: $3,477.72
Price Realized: $4,155.88
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

One of the rarest single signed baseballs in existence: a vintage horsehide signed by the commissioner to end all commssioners, Kenesaw Mountain Landis. The stern, stone-faced judge who saved the game from the Black Sox gambling scandals was not known for light reverie, and generally threw his autograph around as lightly as he would manhole covers. Thus, his somewhat light but eminently readable marker "Kenesaw M. Landis" on the sweet spot in black fountain pen ink is a real historical treasure, grading an attractive 7/10. The Reach Official AL ball (Harridge) itself is EX though there is a patch of damage that has all but removed the word "League" from the "American League Ball" stamping. Otherwise, there are only scattered areas of soiling and wear, making this blue and red stitched ball one for the ages and an appropriate memento of the commissioner whose legacy is still being felt today.
