Lot 1581: 1914 Jack Johnson Vaudeville Poster

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $500.00
Winning Bid: $1,159.26

Stunningly rare vintage Jack Johnson poster -- not for a fight but a 1914 gig on the London vaudeville stage. The background: Johnson KO'd champ Tommy Burns in Australia in 1908 but wasn't recognized until he beat "white hope" Jim Jeffries in Las Vegas in 1910. But when race riots ensued, and Johnson had to flee the States in 1913 because of trumped-up charges of violating the Mann Act, he wound up in England, where he earned his keep on the stage, in exhibitions of bag punching and 3-round "matches" against a sparring partner. Johnson played the Metropolitan Theater on Edgeware, beginning August 31, 1914 for a 6-night run. In the 12 x 18" poster, he gets top billing in bold red type, towering over the other acts (including "Eccentric Gymnastic Act" Maude & Gill). Poster is VG-EX and beautifully framed. A must-get for fight historians with an abiding fascination for Johnson and his trials and tribulations.
