Lot 1625: 1892 Sullivan vs. Corbett Heavyweight Championship Ticket Unused Ticket (PSA 4)

This full unused ticket from the John L. Sullivan vs. James J. “Gentleman Jim” Corbett Heavyweight Championship in 1892 is an outstanding piece of boxing history. This fight was a milestone in the sport, as it was the first heavyweight bout in which the participants wore gloves. Corbett was a new breed of boxer who studied the science of the sport. In the much anticipated match, held in New Orleans, he performed brilliantly, countering Sullivan’s attacks and bullish charges, In the 21st round, Sullivan was exhausted and Corbett knocked him out with a right hand. Corbett successfully defended his crown through 1897. Sullivan never fought again. Both Sullivan and Corbett were elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame. The ticket reads "John L. Sullivan and Jas. J. Corbett Grand Glove Contest For The Heavyweight Championship of the World At The Olympic Club, Wednesday, September 7, 1892. Nine O'Clock P.M. Purse $25,000. Tickets $15.00. Entrance Charles Street." The ticket measures 3.25" wide x 2.25" high. Encapsulated and PSA graded 4 (VG-EX).
