Lot 1838: 1950s Detroit Lions Game Worn Jersey
ITEM DESCRIPTION

Nowadays they make these things as "throwback jerseys" but the replicas pale beside real vintage items such as this utterly splendid Lion top from the '50s, a typic no-frills number that exemplifies the Lions who copped 3 NFL titles, in '52, '53 and '57 (the last after coach Buddy Parker quit before the season, saying they couldn't possibly win) when the men had names like Bobby Layne (who admittedly felt little if any pain, thanks to his close friend Jack Daniels), Hopalong Cassidy, Jack Christiansen, Yale Lary and Leon Hart. The blue V-necked jersey here, adorned only with the number 70 on front, back and both sleeves, stitched onto the strop-tough material in silver tackle twill, likely belonged to a linebacker or lineman. Whoever wore it, the perils of the gridiron are evident in the wear and slight fading, yet it has survived with only a small hole between the 7 and 0 on the front and a reverse L-shape tear in a similar spot on the back. Classic tagging on front interior is "Griswold Sporting Goods Co." and a partly-shredded size "52" tag. Few of these babies are left, so leap on it and tell the throwbacks to take a hike.
