Lot 1426: 1910 Punch Cuban Baseball Cards with Chief Bender (3)
The Holy Grail of Cuban baseball cards. These are the only specimens we have ever seen for sale. There are three here: Alfredo Cabrera as shortstop for Almendares (one of the top players of the day he lead Almendares to a pennant as player-manager in 1915), Chico Gonzalez for Havana, and future HOFer Chief Bender as pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics. These cards are real photos pasted on cardboard and measure about 1 7/8x1.25”. They were created in 1910 in celebration of the tour the Philadelphia Athletics and Detroit Tigers played in Cuba against Cuban teams. Detroit fielded a team including Ty Cobb, while the World Champion Athletics brought their great pitching talent including Coombs, Plank and Chief Bender. The Cubans boasted an incredible lineup of John Henry Lloyd, Bruce Petway and Homerun Johnson. The cards are overall Fair condition.
