Lot 452: Pictorial Clipper w/ Mendoza Humphries
ITEM DESCRIPTION
A very unusual and special supplement to the New York Clipper, from the Christmas and New Year Holidays (1859-60). Unusual because it is American, and 1859 is a very early period to see this United States print. It features a large engraving of Richard Humphries vs. Daniel Mendoza, the fabled 18th century legend, the first Jewish Champion in history (1792-95). On the verso is an important engraving of J.C. Heenan & Thomas Sayers, advertising the upcoming Championship slated for April 16, 1860 - an epic battle between an American and a Brit. This illegal fight (boxing was illegal in Britain and the U.S.) was held in Farnborough, Hampshire. The ungloved fight lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes before being raided by the police, and the match ended in a draw. Each fighter has a short bio underneath his image. Paper measures 21.5x30” folded over. Technically G-VG.
