On Wednesday, November 26th, 1975 Bobby Orr stepped onto the ice at Madison Square Garden in New York for what would be his last ever game in a Boston Bruins uniform. This is that uniform. The tackle twill spoked B sits on the chest of this black dureen jersey with Bobby’s famous “4” on the back and again on each sleeve. Tagged in the neck by Wilson in size 46 with a garter-style fight strap in the tail. Bobby played in only five road games this season and the shirt displays light wear with a few good stick marks, some interior pilling and one circular team repair. Embroidered bears sit up on each shoulder as the team removed the circular Bicentennial patches prior to the following season and this set was reused for the pre-season of 1976-77. With the shirt turned inside out, you can make out the ghostly outline of the former patch and some of the old threads remain. The front crest does have some damage, possibly sustained during washing. This historic jersey has been heavily researched and is matched to a cover photo of Bobby on the front of the July 1976 issue of the Hockey News (included). The team logo on the front is hand-stitched and each one differs slightly from the next. Five characteristics of the crest can be matched to the photo. In addition, a blemish in the sewing resulting in a balling of thread at one elbow is also identified in the photograph. Bobby Orr generally wore a larger jersey, size 50. This uniform is a smaller size 46. Photos of Orr during the 1974-75 season show him wearing a loose-fitting uniform that tends to hang out over his pants. In photos of Bobby from 1975-76, his final season with Boston, he is clearly wearing a tighter, body hugging sweater. Accompanying documentation includes the issue of the Hockey News showing the photo match, a diagram of the matching characteristics and schedules showing that Bobby played his tenth and final Bruins game on the road on the 26th of November. Hockey history!
