Lot 593: Teofilo Stevenson Autographed Fight Worn Robe

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $500.00
Winning Bid: $2,010.00
Price Realized: $2,401.95
Auction Date:6/18/2003 9:00 PM EST

To our knowledge, this is the first robe of this great fighter ever to be offered at public sale. Teofilo Stevenson is not well known outside of Cuba due to the fact that he never went pro. The communist government of Cuba, in hopes of challenging the world's best athletes at the Olympic Games, established boxing schools, which trained and groomed the young amateur Stevenson. After winning the gold at the Munich Olympics in the super heavyweight division, Stevenson attracted the attention of promoters and managers all over the world. He went on to win a total of 3 Olympic gold medals, but never got the opportunity to enter into the professional boxing arena due to a near-fatal accident in his home. He might have won 4 gold medals, had Cuba not boycotted the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Offered is a white satin robe with blue trim worn by Teofilo Stevenson, one of the greatest heavyweight amateurs in history. "CUBA" is sewn on the verso in blue lettering. The front is signed twice - once on the left breast pocket in black marker, and once on the right shoulder in red marker. The robe, complete with blue sash (no hood) is the size and exact style used by Teofilo Stevenson during the 1970's. Collar tagging is "Batos, Cuba." Covered with a number of minor stains and shows extensive wear. Comes with a photo showing Stevenson wearing almost the exact style robe. Obtained in Cuba from Teofilo Stevenson. LOA from renowned boxing expert, Craig Hamilton of JO Sports.
