Lot 519: 1966 Dr. Solar #18 Original Cover Painting by George Wilson
ITEM DESCRIPTION

Exceptional cover art for the Gold Key comic book of this “atomic man” endowed with incredible super powers. Oil-on-board (16x20”) is one of the finest cover paintings of the era you will ever see. Resplendent image of the first ever Gold Key character appears to be a costumed cross between the Silver Age Flash and Cyclops of original X-Men. The image shows two space vehicles in battle (one is destroying the other) while Solar looks on in futile anguish. Artwork appears to be the work of artist extraordinaire George Wilson (1921-1988). Not only does the overall work appear to be his, but also the supreme dominating image of Solar in the foreground with smaller images flanking is a consistent theme of Wilson’s. Wilson was a genius. As a resident cover painter for Gold Key he was perhaps best known for his work on the Phantom, which has been exhaustively reproduced on everything from toys to the Avon paperbacks. Condition: some minor adhesive marks outside the field of action were used in the publishing, and it is o/w EX-MT. Comes with copy of the actual comic book that pales in comparison to this outstanding original painting.
