Lot 974: 1968 Willie Mays Game Used Bat (35.5")

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $1,500.00
Winning Bid:
Auction Date:6/18/2003 9:00 PM EST

Willie Mays was the perfect athletic specimen, a combination of speed, power, and showmanship - and one of the most productive hitters in history. But his essence cannot be measured by statistics alone. He was the greatest ballplayer the baseball world had seen, and many believe to be the greatest of all time. Approaching every game as if he were trying to make the team, Say Hey brought the kind of work ethic on to the field that managers dream about. Aside from transcending color lines and gaining worldwide respect, Mays embodied everything the American fans envisioned in their ultimate hero. This bat is not just a great vintage piece of equipment. It is a symbol of what our American pastime has evolved into. This celebrated piece of lumber will be held up as a constant reminder of the superior athlete Willie Mays was. Adirondack M63 shows plenty of vintage use, bearing the scars of many trips to the plate. Slightly cracked handle. His number "24" written on the knob is slightly faded and bled. The thin black ring at the top of the handle dates this beauty to the 1968 season (this was the only year in which this design was employed).
