For the World War II generation, the day the Sultan of Swat, the great Bambino died, is remembered in the way Baby Boomers recall the night John Lennon was murdered. With shock, disbelief and a deep sense of personal loss. Willard Mullin, the “Babe Ruth” of sports cartoonists, hits the nail right on the head in his monumentally historic cartoon, offered here. It’s not the 714 career HRs or the 60 HRs in 1927 that they mourned. Babe Ruth was a life force, like no other, and his death was a jolting shock to a generation’s self- perception of invincibility. America, as a nation, had conquered the Great Depression and Adolph Hitler, but Babe Ruth’s passing was a reminder to individuals of fleeting youth and their own mortality. This cartoon first appeared in the New York World Telegram and was reprinted in The Sporting News’ special commemorative issue for The Babe. The artwork, measuring 14x20", exhibits the normal artist's markings and instructions, otherwise NRMT.
