Lot 1300: George Wright Book Signed To His Grandson

George Wright, one of the first inductees to the Hall of Fame when it opened in 1939, was baseball's first franchise player. His older brother Harry formed the first professional baseball team in 1869 (the Cincinnati Red Stockings) and George was the first recruited player at shortstop. This hardcover book put out by George Wright's sporting goods company (Wright & Ditson) in Boston, MA. is entitled, The Playground or Outdoor Games for Boys and contains 124 wood-cut illustrations of outdoor recreations for young boys. Signed in bold black ink on the contents page, "From Granddaddy to George Wright 2nd - Won Potatoe Race - May 18th, 1931." VG condition. 5x7". Originally came from a Wright family relative.
