Lot 438: Jefferson Davis Broadside (6x9”)

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $100.00
Winning Bid: $96.23
Price Realized: $115.00
Auction Date:6/18/2003 9:00 PM EST

Broadside from A.W. Auner, song publisher & printer in Philadelphia, is an early political cartoon, produced immediately after the conclusion of the Civil War. An illustration of Jefferson Davis dressed in women’s clothing and sitting in a ditch holding a knife. Behind him is a black union soldier who proclaims, “Bress my stars if kere aint Massa Jeff Davis in de las’ ditch at last”. As the rumor goes, when the President of the Confederate states, Jefferson Davis, was captured in Georgia at the end of the war (May 10, 1865), he had disguised himself in a woman’s dress. Although this is not an accurate account, this broadside captures the tone of the Union immediately following the defeat of the Confederate troops. Some staining to the paper. A tear on the left side has been lightly restored. VG-EX.
